When planning a weekend in Red Wing, it is easy to get swept up in the beautiful riverfront paths and historic downtown architecture. But if you want to understand how this unique corner of Minnesota truly came to be, you need to head up College Hill to the Goodhue County Historical Society.
As Minnesota’s oldest county historical society (established all the way back in 1869), it is the ultimate launchpad to engage with local roots, learn something unexpected, and spend quality time with the family.
If you are looking for a unique way to entertain the crew, keep an eye on their calendar. The Historical Society hosts designated Free Family Fun Days. usually running from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM the second Saturday of the month (excluding the month of August).
These aren’t just dry lectures; they are interactive, hands-on community events designed to bridge the gap between generations. One month you might be exploring native plants for Earth Day, and the next you might find your kids climbing into emergency vehicles for a “Touch-a-Truck” event with local first responders. It is a fantastic, opportunity to dive headfirst into local storytelling.
Don’t treat this like a quick 20-minute pit stop. Make sure to factor in plenty of time to browse the museum floor. The exhibits do a beautiful job of tracing the region’s evolution:
The deep history of the Dakota people who have lived in the region for centuries. Just a few miles up the road the culture and pride continue within the Prairie Island Community.
The rise of local industries like the world-famous Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery and Red Wing Shoes.
The personal, daily-life stories of early European immigrants settling the river valley.
The displays are scannable & engaging. Be sure to check out the “new” rotating lobby displays.
Before you head back down the hill, take a few minutes to scour the museum gift shop. It is well stocked with localized items you simply won’t find in big-box retail stores:
Unique Apparel: Red Wing and Goodhue County themed clothing.
Artisan Goods: Locally made jewelry and crafts.
Mementos: Historically accurate keepsakes, local history books, and fun souvenirs for the kids.

Beyond the exhibits, the History Center has quietly become one of the town’s most versatile event spaces, balancing modern amenities with a historic backdrop.
If you are organizing a baby shower, a bridal shower, or a multi-generational family reunion or merely want to gather your friends for a film screening, the facility offers a cozy, modern meeting space that includes a wall mounted Smart TV. It is fully equipped so you can host a private gathering in a comfortable space. Reduce the stress of cleaning and prepping your home to host your next event.
