Things To Do

Red Wing has something for everyone.

Red Wing has activities ranging from rigorous to relaxed. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back solo adventure, a romantic getaway for two, an active family event, or a multi-generational group outing, Red Wing has activities to suit your interests.

Those up for a challenge can rock climb, mountain bike, play disc golf, hike, cross-country and downhill ski. For a more relaxing getaway, take in eagle watching along the river, stroll through the locally owned shops, grab a bite in one of our restaurants, brewery, or wineries. Scenic views can be enjoyed by car, boat, bike, or foot.

Our museums offer a glimpse into our history while being interactive and fun. Visit the Red Wing Shoe Store and Museum where you will find the World’s Largest Boot, flagship store, clearance center, and a free museum that tells the story of our famous boots. The Pottery Museum of Red Wing is also free and has over 6,000 pieces of pottery dating back to the early days before refrigeration through the days where production focused on art pottery. The Goodhue County Historical Society is a wonderful resource for information about the people, geography and history of the area. The History Center has ongoing exhibits, featured exhibits, Free Family Fun Days, and speakers throughout the year. Our Aliveo Military Museum and Ski Jumping Hall of Fame and Museum are open more limited hours; see the listings for details.

Activities on the river and rail

Dock your boat at Levee Park for the day and enjoy bars, restaurants, live music, and shopping just a few minutes’ walk away in the historic downtown district. Fishermen can explore creeks and river pools, or you can find a spot in one of our many riverfront parks to watch classic paddle boats from New Orleans dock and barge traffic making its way along the river. Explore the backwaters by canoe, kayak, and stand up paddle board for up-close nature experiences.

Train, history, and architecture buffs will enjoy a visit to the historic train depot – also home to the Visitors and Convention Bureau. The Amtrak Empire Builder stops twice a day for passengers traveling from Chicago to the West Coast.

Red Wing is also home to the well-known Cannon Valley Trail, a converted 19.7 mile rail bed running along the Mississippi River for biking, walking, and cross-country skiing.

Year-round fun for all

Red Wing is a playground in every season. During autumn and winter, enjoy strolling along the Mississippi River for beautiful fall colors and bird watching, enjoy apple orchards, pumpkin displays, seeing a performance at the historic Sheldon Theatre, and the fall wine harvest. Holiday visitors can enjoy skiing, shopping, scenery, and activities including the annual Holiday Stroll when the quaint downtown becomes a playground for young and old alike. When spring and summer are in full bloom, our parks, trails, bluffs, river, and golf courses are gorgeous spots to enjoy your getaway.

Whatever your interests, Red Wing has the views, vistas, and activities to create lasting memories. Visit our calendar of events or contact the Visitor Center to plan your trip.
