Introduction to Timber Framing: Build a Sawhorse | The Anderson Center

In this class, students will get acquainted with timber framing tools, practices and techniques while building your own sawhorse! This course offers a great starting point for students interested in learning to timber frame. We will employ square rule methodology and build a sawhorse using traditional tools. We will also use a few power tools to speed the process along.
No experience is needed as this is an intro to timber framing class. Tooling, instruction and material will be provided for you. Students are expected to bring a positive attitude, willingness to learn and basic safety equipment.
Students will cut, assemble and take home a fully completed sawhorse. Students that work a little faster may have the opportunity to begin a second sawhorse. Materials for a second sawhorse are available for any student that wishes to bring the materials home and further refine their timber framing skills.
During the class, we will layout and cut timbers using the Square Rule method. Students will assemble and test fit the sawhorse and use the drawboring technique to pull things together. Throughout the class, students will become familiar with the following topics:
-TF Terms Tools (Hand & Power)
-Square Rule Layout
-Sharpening (Chisel and Auger Bit)
-Measuring and Checking Techniques
-Making Pegs
-Drawboring
-Shaving Horse
No experience needed. We supply the community tooling, instruction, and material. Along with your positive attitude, willingness to learn, you will need to bring the following:
-Bag Lunch
-Foul Weather Clothing
-Leather Shoes
-Gloves
