Cancelled – History Break: Women’s History Month l Goodhue County Historical Society
Mar 25, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
From Minnesota’s First University to Colorado’s Second Star on the Suffrage Flag
Join Dr. Kristin Mapel Bloomberg Professor of Women’s Studies, Hamline University; Hamline University Endowed Chair in the Humanities. For our women’s history Month History Break. Dr. Bloomberg will be talking about some early Hamline university Graduates. Collegiate co-education provided some women on the emerging frontier with the opportunity to pursue a university education on an equal basis with men. Two of those women – sisters Emily and Mary Sorin – were among the first graduates of Hamline University, established in 1854 at Red Wing, Minnesota, which was among America’s first truly coeducational universities. Although their activism was years apart, each participated in activities that resulted in Colorado’s 1893 achievement of full suffrage for its women citizens.
History Break is a free monthly program that connects residents of Goodhue County to local, state, and national history. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, and beverages will be available for purchase.
