History Break: Uncertain Lives l Goodhue Co. Historical Society
Feb 19, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Mix up your lunch routine and take a History Break at the Goodhue County Historical Society! Bring your lunch to the History Center on Wednesday, February 19th from 12-1 PM, for an engaging and thought-provoking program on local history and race relations. Local historian, author, and educator Frederick Johnson presents his book Uncertain Lives: African Americans and Their First 150 Years in the Red Wing, MN Area. The program is free of charge, and copies of Mr. Johnson’s book are available for purchase at the History Center.
Similar to virtually every other ethnic group that moved into the Red Wing area in the late 19th century, the African American community hoped to build successful lives in a vibrant Minnesota frontier village. However, the legacy of slavery and entrenched racist attitudes throughout the country and the state made this goal complicated, dangerous, and uncertain. Johnson’s book explores the history of race relations—and racism—in Red Wing, and tells a piece of Minnesota history that is not discussed often enough.
