History Break: Non-Partisan League | Goodhue County Historical Society

Nov 20, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Spend your lunch hour at the Goodhue County History Center for our monthly free lunchtime program! Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch with them while they soak up stories. All programs begin at noon. Space is limited to 60 people.

Join Associate Professor of History at Augsburg College Michael J. Lansing as he talks about the Non-Partisan League. In 1915, North Dakoota Farmers gouged by steep Railroad rates, exorbitant mortgage interest, and short credit created the starkest challenge to party politics in twentieth-century America. Their movement–the Nonpartisan League (NPL)– deployed novel tactics that challenged exsisting institutions. An effort to empower citizens, the Leauge drove a brief but powerful electoral insurgency. At its peak, almost 250,000 paying members lived in thirteen states (including Minnesota) and two Canadian provinences. As a result the NPL dramatically shaped North American politics in the late 1910s and early 1920s.
