Books in the Barn: Gwen Westerman | The Anderson Center

Books in the Barn with Gwen Westerman will be held in historic barn at the Anderson Center and is part of a three part series of poetry readings and workshops that will take place this Fall at the Anderson Center. Admission is free to Anderson Center members and people under 18. This event is open to the public and is a pay-what-you-can admission. At 7 p.m. there will be a public reception, and a program titled “Why I Write About the Land,” reading with a visual art exhibition in the historic barn. Why I Write About the Land
Gwen Westerman is co-author of Mni-Sota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota, a published poet, an award-winning visual artist, a respected educator and researcher, and an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. The title of Gwen’s event is “Why I Write About the Land.” Please join us as Gwen Westerman reads from her writing, shows her quilts and fiber arts, and discusses her multi-disciplinary approach to history as seen through place, focused on Red Wing and the Upper Mississippi River Valley.
Westerman recieved a Minnesota book award for Mni-Sota Makoce. Her poetry has been included in numerous anthologies, including New Poets of Native Nations, edited by Heid E. Erdrich and published by Graywolf Press. Her quilts have won awards and been added to the permanent collections of museums across the region.
