Harp Workshop with Susan Syverson at Hobgoblin @ Hobgoblin Music & Stoney End Harps | Red Wing | Minnesota | United States

HARP WORKSHOPS – ALL SKILL LEVELS

Registration: 9-10AM 2nd floor Hobgoblin Music Loft

Workshop I: 10-11:30 SCANDINAVIAN TUNES

Scandinavian (mostly Swedish, some Norwegian or Finnish) tunes and how to accompany. ‘Learn lullabies, polska (not to be confused with ‘polka’!), some quirky rhythmic ideas typical of these northern climes,  and a bit of background for why the Scandinavian music has the sound it does have. Tiny bit of lever work.  Each one will go home with some dazzling new gems.’

Workshop 2: 12:30-2:00 TRANSFORMING SIMPLE WORLD MELODIES

‘Turning a simple melody into a great harp piece’ (Melodies from all over the world.) Can every melody become a harp piece? Susan would like to believe so. In her bag of tunes are lovely things from Canada, Africa, Ireland, Bretagne and more. Concentration will be on how to make a simple melody a full piece, which works and sounds stunning on our stunning instrument!  Participants will learn a bit by ear, but will receive music as well.’

COST FOR BOTH WORKSHOPS, LUNCH & CONCERT:  $65

SINGLE WORKSHOP ONLY: $35

CONCERT IF ATTENDING ONLY 1 WORKSHOP:  $8.00

After completing B.A. and M.M. under Dr. Carrol McLaughlin (U. of Az. School of Music), Susan was hired as harp instructor at School of Music Kristianstad, Sweden. Susan was asked to begin this harp program; it has grown tremendously and is now the largest (and finest! Susan adds) in Scandinavia. She freelances throughout Scandinavia and Europe. She has taught harp in Ireland, has been a return teacher and performer at Edinburgh International Harp Festival, and guest teacher/artist at Nordic Harp Meets. She brought harp to Tanzania where she did church work for 5 years during the Rwanda war. (The harp was great comfort here to Susan and others, the harp as healing tool…) She composes and arranges for the harp, has solo and chamber recordings to her credit, and has produced the first harp method book in any Scandinavian language (Swedish, though now available in Danish as well.). She performs for public radio, royals, in castles, medieval churches, for barn dances and pub sessions. Both the pedal and lever harp are her friends; you can imagine which one she gladly carries on her back and on the train for a tour or rehearsal? With humor and great theoretic knowledge, she is a popular tutor. She is proudly one-third of awarded Nordic folk music trio Vindonia , who will be touring the Midwest in June 2017. For more information about SUSAN SYVERSON, please visit http://www.nisswastamman.org/stamma/vindonia.html
